Engineered hardwood is made in layers. The top is a genuine hardwood veneer, often oak, maple or a similar species, so the surface you see and walk on is real wood. Beneath it sits a core of cross-layered plywood or a dense fibreboard, with the grain of each layer set at an angle to the one above. This layered construction is what separates engineered boards from solid hardwood, which is milled from a single piece of wood through its full thickness. The veneer supplies the natural grain and colour, while the core gives the board its shape and its resistance to movement.
Wood expands and contracts as humidity changes, and it moves most across the width of the grain. In a solid plank, that movement pulls in a single direction, which is why solid floors can gap in a dry winter and tighten in a humid summer. In an engineered board, the cross-layered core balances those forces against each other, so the plank stays flatter and shifts less through the year. Across the GTA, where indoor humidity can swing between a dry heating season and a humid summer, that added stability helps a floor hold its fit over time. It does not make wood indifferent to moisture, so indoor humidity still needs to stay within a sensible range.
Because it moves less, engineered hardwood can go in places where solid wood is not practical. It works on main floors, in bedrooms and across open-concept living areas, and it can be installed over concrete, which solid hardwood generally cannot. That makes it one of the few real-wood options for below-grade spaces such as basements, provided the slab is dry and the right method is used. The wear layer, meaning the hardwood veneer on top, varies in thickness from one product to another. A thin veneer is meant to be lived on and cleaned rather than sanded, while a thicker veneer may allow a light sanding and refinish once, and sometimes more, over the life of the floor. This matters if you want the option to refresh the surface years later instead of replacing it. When we bring samples, we can point out the veneer thickness so you can weigh how many times, if at all, a floor could be refinished against its look and your budget.
Wood needs time to settle to the conditions of your home before it goes down. Boards are usually left in the room for a period so their moisture content comes into line with the space, which reduces movement once the floor is installed. The work goes more smoothly when the home sits at a normal, lived-in temperature and humidity rather than mid-renovation extremes. After installation, keeping indoor humidity within a moderate band through the year, with a little humidifying in winter and ventilation or air conditioning in summer, helps the floor stay flat and tightly seated.
Most engineered floors arrive prefinished, with the protective coating cured at the factory, so there is no on-site sanding or finishing odour and the floor is ready to use sooner. Everyday care is straightforward. Sweep or vacuum the grit that can scratch a surface, wipe spills before they sit, and clean with a barely damp mop rather than a wet one, since standing water is hard on any wood floor. Felt pads under furniture legs and mats at entrances take up much of the daily wear and help the finish last.
Engineered hardwood is one of the few real-wood floors that can sit over in-floor radiant heating, where the temperature changes from below would push a solid plank harder than it comfortably moves. The cross-layered core takes that rise and fall more evenly, which lowers the risk of gapping or cupping above the heat. Not every board is rated for this use, and the system needs to be brought up to temperature gradually rather than switched to full heat in one step. Before the floor goes down, we confirm the product is approved for radiant use and follow the heating and thickness guidance that comes with it.
Because the core keeps a board stable, engineered hardwood is made in wider and longer planks than solid wood usually allows, which changes how a room reads underfoot. The format also shapes the look and the fit:
