Moisture and the slab come first
Before choosing carpet, ask whether the basement has had leaks, seepage or persistent dampness. During a visit we can discuss that history and look for visible signs around the floor, walls and drains. Any active water problem needs attention before carpeting. If the condition of the slab is uncertain, a qualified assessment may be needed before installation.
Fibres that tolerate below-grade conditions
Carpet construction matters as much as fibre. Synthetic options such as olefin and nylon can be considered for lower-level rooms, but no carpet is a solution to an active moisture problem. We can compare available products by feel, traffic needs and care requirements, using the specifications for each style.
When a raised subfloor is worth considering
A raised subfloor may be worth discussing when a basement needs a separate layer beneath the carpet. It changes the finished floor height, including door and stair transitions. Whether it suits the room depends on the existing floor and the space available. It is an option to consider for a specific project, not a standard part of every carpet installation.
Choosing an underpad for a basement
Underpad affects how carpet feels underfoot and how it handles traffic. For a basement, the choice should suit the carpet manufacturer's requirements, the floor conditions and the way the room will be used. During the estimate, we can compare density and thickness alongside the carpet. Underpad does not solve a moisture problem in the slab.
Low-pile versus plush below grade
A lower, denser pile can suit busy rec rooms, stairs and routes to the laundry. A taller cut pile feels softer in a guest room or home theatre with lighter traffic. We can compare the feel and appearance of each option in your basement and choose for the way the space will be used.
Keeping basement carpet fresh
Basement carpet stays in good shape with a few simple habits suited to a cooler, sometimes damper room:

- Keep the room ventilated, and consider a dehumidifier through humid months to steady the air.
- Blot spills quickly and dry the area well so moisture does not sit in the pile.
