Why does my carpet buckle? and how to remove wrinkles from carpet

What Causes Carpet Buckling and Wrinkling?

There are four main reasons why carpets develop wrinkles or buckling:

  1. Improper installation
  2. Extreme foot traffic
  3. Water damage
  4. Carpet quality issues

Improper Installation

Installation issues are the most common cause of carpet buckling. Wall-to-wall carpets often come with a latex backing, which must be properly acclimatized and stretched during installation. The acclimatization process should take place at temperatures between 65-95ºF (18-35ºC). Ideally, the temperature should be maintained for at least 48 hours before installation, during the process, and 72 hours afterward. This ensures that the carpet adjusts to its new environment.

In new homes or subdivisions, buckling frequently occurs because builders fail to heat the property to the required temperature. Additionally, if the carpet isn't allowed to acclimatize before installation, it may shrink or buckle once exposed to normal conditions.

Extreme Foot Traffic

While it takes significant effort, extreme foot traffic can eventually cause carpets to buckle. Wearing high heels indoors is one common culprit, as it places extra pressure on the carpet backing. Heavy furniture, especially pool tables, can also cause delamination in carpet backing if moved frequently. Shifting heavy furniture multiple times a year can stress the carpet, leading to buckling over time.

The effects of improper installation and heavy use often show up 5 to 7 years after installation. This is why some big-box stores only offer a one-year labor warranty. If you're wondering about our labor warranty, click here!

Over time, repetitive movement and stretching will cause the latex adhesive to fail, resulting in the separation of the primary and secondary backings. Even after re-stretching, some wrinkles or lines may still be visible, but regular foot traffic and vacuuming can help make them less noticeable.

Water Damage

Water damage can also cause buckling by weakening the latex backing of your carpet, leading to delamination. Water damage isn't limited to flooding or spills; improper carpet cleaning techniques can have the same effect. Using too much water during steam cleaning or not extracting the water properly can damage your carpet over time.

To avoid these issues, always hire a professional carpet cleaning service with IICRC certified technicians. This ensures they use the correct methods and equipment, and that they bring their own water supply rather than relying on tap water, which may not be ideal for cleaning carpets.

Carpet Quality Issues

Choosing the right carpet for the right application is crucial. Many flooring companies can help guide you toward the right choice, even if it means upselling. While upselling isn't always preferred, it’s sometimes necessary to meet your expectations for durability and performance. High-traffic areas like hallways, stairs, dining rooms, and living rooms wear out faster than low-traffic areas like bedrooms, so it's essential to pick a carpet that can withstand heavy use. For example, if you use office chairs with roller legs on your carpet, be sure to use a plastic floor mat. This prevents unnecessary damage and extends the life of your carpet.

Cost and Process to Re-Stretch Your Carpet

To remove wrinkles from your carpet permanently, the entire carpeted area usually needs to be re-stretched. Some sections can be treated locally, but this may not provide a long-lasting solution. Re-stretching involves reinstalling your carpet without needing to replace the underpad. However, the room must be cleared of all furniture to achieve uniform tension across the entire carpet.

During the re-stretching process, some areas of the carpet may shift, causing gaps. In such cases, seams or patches might be needed to fill those gaps. The cost of re-stretching depends on the type of carpet and the complexity of the work. Here's a basic cost breakdown:

To ensure long-lasting results, always choose a professional service. Cutting corners with cheaper or quicker solutions may result in needing to re-stretch your carpet again in the future.
